Digital kiosk proposed for Washington Avenue and 16th Street

The Historic Preservation Board reviews the new site Nov. 10, after it asked the kiosk company in April to find a better spot than Española Way and Drexel.

Update (Wednesday, 1:59 p.m.): The kiosks carry advertising. A 2024 city notice describes the earlier Historic Preservation Board approval for IKE as covering “eight digital advertising kiosks” in a local historic district. That approval was appealed by Outfront Media Group to the city’s historic preservation special magistrate, according to the notice; the outcome of that appeal was not in the records Red Sidewalks reviewed. The city’s share of any ad revenue under its current IKE agreement is also not stated in the documents filed for the Nov. 10 meeting.

An interactive digital kiosk could go up at Washington Avenue and 16th Street, in the Flamingo Park Historic District, if the city’s Historic Preservation Board approves it on Nov. 10.

The kiosk is the last of three kiosk locations the City Commission approved on Dec. 17, 2025, all on the Washington Avenue and Española Way corridors, according to the commission’s resolution. The resolution says the Española Way Association and the Washington Avenue Business Improvement District asked for them and that they will be installed at no cost to the city.

IKE Smart City, the company the city hired in 2023 to install and run the kiosks, first proposed the third one at Española Way and Drexel Avenue. In April, the preservation board approved kiosks at Washington Avenue and 8th Street and at Washington Avenue and 12th Street, but continued the third so the company could find a more suitable location, according to a Sept. 21 letter from the company’s lawyers.

The new site faces north and south so that only the narrow side of the kiosk points toward the nearest building, and it sits 14 feet 7 inches from the nearest business, the letter says. It would use the same wave-edged design the board approved in 2024.

The city’s agreement with IKE allows up to 30 kiosks citywide: an initial 15, all of which have been approved by the city’s design boards, and up to 15 more that the commission may add, according to the resolution and the letter. Many are already installed, the letter says.

The board meets at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at City Hall, 1700 Convention Center Drive. The agenda and the full application are on the city’s meeting portal.
