Miami Beach Fire Department Fleet Manager Gerald “Jerry” DeYoung has been named one of the top five emergency vehicle technicians in the country in Firehouse Magazine’s 2026 EVT of the Year Awards, the city announced Wednesday.

DeYoung and his crew at the department’s Fire Shop maintain the city’s fire engines, rescue trucks and other emergency vehicles, keeping them running and ready for calls, according to the city’s release. The award recognizes technicians for their fleet maintenance, mechanical reliability, innovation and attention to firefighter safety, the city said.

Fire Chief Digna Abello said in the release that firefighters depend on reliable equipment to respond safely, and that DeYoung and his team make that possible behind the scenes.
