Officers on a welfare check for an elderly woman found 15 dogs and four puppies on North Michigan Avenue. The city ordered the house vacated.
Miami Beach police arrested a 50-year-old man on an animal cruelty charge Tuesday after officers found 19 dogs living in deplorable conditions at a home in Mid-Beach, CBS News Miami and Local 10 reported Wednesday.
Officers went to the house on North Michigan Avenue to assist the Florida Department of Children and Families with a welfare check on an elderly woman, according to CBS News Miami. Police said they found severely unsanitary living conditions, along with 15 adult dogs and four puppies. The puppies were in an uncovered cooler contaminated with waste, the station reported.
The man lived at the home on and off for about five years and was responsible for the dogs, police said, according to CBS News Miami. He was arrested on one count of animal cruelty, the station reported.
Miami-Dade Animal Services removed all 19 dogs and took them for veterinary evaluation and care, CBS News Miami reported.
The city’s Building Department declared the house unsafe to occupy and issued an order to vacate, according to the station. The Miami Beach Fire Department, Code Enforcement and county agencies also responded, according to the station. The elderly woman was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center for evaluation, CBS News Miami reported.
