Surfside promotes police Sgt. Marian Cruz to major
The 22-year law enforcement veteran was promoted in a ceremony at Town Hall, as Jay Matelis settles in as the town's permanent police chief.
Surfside has promoted police Sgt. Marian Cruz to major, the town announced Wednesday after a ceremony in the Town Commission chambers.
Mayor Shlomo Danzinger, Commissioner David Weingot, Acting Town Manager Sandra McCready and Police Chief Jay Matelis attended, along with members of the department and Cruz’s family, according to the town.
The town said Cruz has 22 years of law enforcement experience. Outside the department, she runs a nonprofit, Closet of Living Hope, which the town said provides essential resources to people and families in need.
The promotion follows Matelis’s swearing-in as permanent chief, which the town reported in its November Gazette on Tuesday. The town’s announcement did not describe the major’s new duties.
