Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach sets Kristallnacht commemoration for Nov. 9
A student program with Holocaust survivors starts at 4:30 p.m., followed by a community ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at the memorial on Meridian Avenue.
Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach will hold its annual commemoration of Kristallnacht, the “Night of Broken Glass,” on Monday, Nov. 9, at the memorial, 1933–1945 Meridian Ave., according to a release from the memorial published by Miami’s Community News.
The day starts at 4:30 p.m. with an educational program for high school students that includes Holocaust survivors, followed at 6:30 p.m. by a community ceremony of remembrance. The organizers say a 105-year-old survivor, local elected officials and representatives of Israel’s consulate general in Miami are expected to take part. The release does not name the speakers or mention a cost.
The memorial is a committee of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. The release lists the federation, the Florida Department of Education and the City of Miami Beach among the event’s presenters. Because of security protocols, it says, members of the media must register in advance.
Kristallnacht took place on Nov. 9 and 10, 1938, when violence against Jewish communities spread across Nazi Germany and the territories it controlled, the release says. This year marks 88 years since.
