Miami Beach proclaims Nov. 4 Celia Cruz Day
The proclamation recalls that the Queen of Salsa's last performance was at the Miami Beach Convention Center in March 2003.
The City of Miami Beach has proclaimed Nov. 4, 2026, Celia Cruz Day in honor of the Cuban singer known as the Queen of Salsa, Diario Las Américas reported Saturday. A proclamation on behalf of Miami-Dade County was presented at the same ceremony, according to the newspaper, which did not give the ceremony’s date or place.
The city’s proclamation recalls that Cruz last performed for an audience at the Miami Beach Convention Center in March 2003, four months before she died, the paper reported. The paper also noted that the Bass and the Wolfsonian museums have held exhibitions on her career.
Mayor Steven Meiner and Commissioner Laura Dominguez took part, along with Miami-Dade County Commissioners Vicki Lopez and Micky Steinberg, according to the report. Omer Pardillo, Cruz’s former manager and the executor of her estate, thanked the officials and said she had roots in Miami Beach going back to the 1950s. He credited songwriter Christina Fernández with bringing the idea to the city commission.
It is not the city’s first tribute: in October 2023 Miami Beach co-designated part of Meridian Avenue as Celia Cruz Way, with a ceremony at 1755 Meridian Ave., the city announced at the time.
This story is based on Diario Las Américas’ report; Red Sidewalks has not independently confirmed the proclamation’s details with the city.
