Westbound I-395 closes overnight three nights as new ramp to southbound I-95 opens

Drivers leaving Miami Beach on the MacArthur Causeway face full overnight closures at Biscayne Boulevard Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights, with detours through downtown Miami.

Drivers heading west from Miami Beach over the MacArthur Causeway will find all lanes of westbound Interstate 395 closed at Biscayne Boulevard for three nights next week, according to the Florida Department of Transportation’s I-395/SR 836/I-95 project team.

Sunday and Monday nights (Nov. 1 and 2), 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.: All westbound I-395 lanes close at Biscayne Boulevard so crews can install drainage pipes across the Dolphin Expressway (State Road 836) near the Northwest 12th Avenue ramp. The northbound and southbound I-95 ramps to westbound SR 836 also close. Drivers bound for the Dolphin Expressway are told to take the Biscayne Boulevard exit (Exit 2), go west on Northeast 13th Street, north on Northeast First Avenue, west on Northwest 14th Street, south on Northwest 12th Avenue and west on Northwest Seventh Street to the SR 836 on-ramp at Northwest 17th Avenue. The I-395 ramps to I-95 stay open for drivers entering from the downtown Miami ramp.

Tuesday night (Nov. 3), 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.: Westbound I-395 and the downtown Miami ramp to I-395 close again so crews can open a new ramp. The posted detour sends drivers off at Biscayne Boulevard, south to Northeast Sixth Street and west to Northwest Seventh Avenue and Northwest Seventh Street to reach SR 836 at Northwest 17th Avenue; drivers going to I-95 can use Northwest Third Avenue (northbound) or Northwest Third Court (southbound).

What changes Wednesday

On the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 4, the new ramp from westbound I-395 to southbound I-95 opens, the project team said. Drivers headed to southbound I-95 will enter it about 500 feet sooner than today, and the change removes a merge: the left lane will lead to southbound I-95, the two center lanes will continue to SR 836 and the right lane will go to northbound I-95, with new overhead signs.

The Miami Herald reported on the closures Friday, aiming its warning at people driving home from the beach late at night. Schedules can change; the project’s alerts and detour maps are at i395-miami.com, and live conditions are on FL511.
