The City of Miami Beach will open a free outdoor exhibit marking 100 years of Miami Beach Ocean Rescue on Thursday, Nov. 5, with an unveiling at 4 p.m., the city announced Tuesday.

“Miami Beach Ocean Heroes: From Ocean Rescue to Coastal Guardians” is set up on weatherproof panels at Galería Ocean Drive, the city’s outdoor gallery in Lummus Park at 1101 Ocean Drive, between 11th and 12th streets. It runs through February 2027.

According to the city, the exhibit uses historic photographs, equipment, large graphics and interactive displays to trace the lifeguard service, which the then City Council created on July 9, 1926. It also recognizes 13 local environmental groups and their volunteers for beach cleanups, plastic reduction, marine conservation and wildlife protection.

One piece is an interactive art installation by Plastic Fisherman, built from recovered plastic caps and small pieces. Visitors can step into the oversized frame and make a heart with their hands as part of a “Become an Ocean Hero” campaign to cut single-use plastics, the city said.

The Office of the Mayor and Commission organized the exhibit with Ocean Rescue and the Environment & Sustainability Department. Miami Beach Fire also invited the public to the unveiling in a post on X.
