Bal Harbour Shops finishes its West Shops wing, with 30 stores opening into 2028
The 200,000-square-foot addition at 9700 Collins Ave. is done, its owner says; a separate housing and hotel plan for the site is still unapproved.
The long-planned expansion of Bal Harbour Shops, 9700 Collins Ave., is complete, its owner announced this week. The two-level West Shops wing adds about 200,000 square feet and 30 new stores and restaurants, which will open in stages through 2028, according to WWD and PROFILEmiami, which reported the center’s Nov. 3 announcement.
The first stores in the wing opened to the public at a morning preview on Sept. 23, according to the visitors bureau’s listing for that event, which pointed drivers to the 96th Street Garage.
Tom Ford, Khaite, Elie Saab and Boucheron are among the newcomers, PROFILEmiami reported. WWD said Louis Vuitton and Celine are also opening in the wing, and that Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, David Yurman, Graff, Loro Piana and more than a dozen other existing tenants are moving into larger spaces there. In the older East Shops, Toteme and Peserico have just opened, with Lululemon and Simkhai expected in 2027, WWD reported.
Matthew Whitman Lazenby, chief executive of Whitman Family Development, which owns the center, told WWD the number of restaurants will roughly double, to at least eight and possibly 12. China Grill is returning, and Slim’s opened earlier this year, PROFILEmiami reported.
For neighbors, the project also changed the block. A Congregational church that stood on the property was sold and rebuilt in Bay Harbor Islands, and a new parking garage went up on its site, replacing an older garage that was torn down for the expansion, Lazenby told WWD. The new wing has two retail levels with parking above, and officials agreed that one of those parking levels can be converted to stores later, he said.
The center’s sales figures come from the owner and have not been independently verified: Lazenby put annual sales at $900 million to $1 billion.
Separately, Whitman Family Development is still pursuing a mixed-use plan for the site under the state’s Live Local Act, with market-rate homes, workforce rental apartments, a hotel and more retail. That proposal has not been approved and has no construction date, PROFILEmiami reported.
