Broad Causeway tolls set to rise Dec. 1; Bay Harbor offers residents $200 yearly pass
The SunPass toll for a car would go from $2 to $3.25 and toll-by-plate from $3.25 to $6.50, according to the town. A flat-rate resident plan is coming.
Tolls on the Shepard Broad Causeway, the bridge between Bay Harbor Islands and North Miami, are scheduled to go up Dec. 1, 2026, according to a notice the Town of Bay Harbor Islands updated Wednesday. Drivers of ordinary two-axle cars would pay $3.25 with SunPass or another electronic transponder and $6.50 if they are billed by plate.
Those are steep jumps from the rates the town has posted since Oct. 1, 2024: $2 with SunPass and $3.25 by plate. The SunPass rate for a car would rise by more than 60 percent, and the plate rate would double. The toll is charged in both directions.
Larger vehicles would pay more under the new table, according to the town:
- Three axles: $10.25 SunPass, $15 by plate (now $9 and $11.75)
- Four axles: $17.25 SunPass, $23.50 by plate (now $16 and $20.25)
- Five axles: $24.25 SunPass, $32 by plate (now $23 and $28.75)
- Each axle beyond five: still $7 SunPass and $8.50 by plate
One date conflict: the town’s news notice and its pass-plan page both say the new rates take effect Dec. 1, 2026, but the summary of the same notice on the town’s home page says the increases begin Dec. 1, 2027. Drivers who cross often may want to confirm with the town before planning around either date.
A flat-rate plan for residents
The town also says Bay Harbor Islands residents will be able to buy a one-year SunPass toll plan for $200, a prepaid flat fee that covers their causeway crossings instead of paying per trip. The plan is open only to two-axle, noncommercial vehicles.
To apply, residents answer “yes” to the residency question on the town’s online application and upload three documents showing the same address: a driver’s license, the vehicle’s registration and a third proof such as a utility bill, property tax bill or cable bill. Approved applicants get an email with a link to pay, according to the town. The town’s pass-plan page says residents became eligible starting Oct. 1, while Wednesday’s notice describes the plan as coming soon.
The town’s office is at 1045 95th St.; its main number is (305) 866-6241.
