Sunny Isles Beach police name lieutenant to lead innovation and technology
Lt. Konetz, credited with rolling out the department's drone-as-first-responder program, takes the new role, the department said.
The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department has named Lt. Konetz its new Innovation and Technology Lieutenant, the department announced Wednesday on Instagram. The department’s post, which did not give the lieutenant’s first name, is the only source for the appointment; Red Sidewalks has not independently verified it.
The department credited Konetz with leading the rollout of its Drone as First Responder program and said it plans to keep expanding technology-driven policing.
According to the city’s website, the police Drone Division has nine sworn officers certified as FAA remote pilots and flies Skydio X10 drones with thermal and infrared cameras. The city says the drones give officers an aerial view of a call before they arrive and are used to search for missing people, track fleeing suspects and stolen cars, support medical calls and drop flotation devices in water rescues. The city describes the department as the first law enforcement agency in Florida to run a fully operational drone program of this kind.
The post did not say when the new role took effect.
