King tides return Friday through Monday; city posts peak times
Low-lying Miami Beach streets could flood around the morning and evening high tides Nov. 6–9. The next round is due Nov. 23–26.
Update (Nov. 6, 12:19 p.m.): The National Weather Service on Friday morning extended its coastal flood statement through 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, for coastal Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. It warns that isolated minor flooding is possible around high tide, with some water on low-lying roads and property, and says not to drive through flooded roads. North Bay Village said the highest water there is expected from 8 to 11 a.m. and 8 to 11 p.m. each day, and Bal Harbour Village also warned of possible flooding in low-lying areas.
Another round of king tides is expected from Friday, Nov. 6, through Monday, Nov. 9, and could flood streets and property in low-lying parts of Miami Beach, the city said Thursday on X and in an alert email. Miami Beach Fire posted the same notice.
The city listed these peak tide times, predicted by NOAA at the Virginia Key tide gauge:
- Friday, Nov. 6: 6:26 a.m. and 6:38 p.m.
- Saturday, Nov. 7: 7:14 a.m. and 7:22 p.m.
- Sunday, Nov. 8: 7:59 a.m. and 8:05 p.m.
- Monday, Nov. 9: 8:42 a.m. and 8:46 p.m.
Water can stay noticeably high for 1.5 to 2 hours before and after each peak, the city said, and peak times vary by location around Miami Beach. The predictions don’t account for wind or rain. NOAA’s predictions for its Government Cut gauge at the south end of the island run about 30 to 50 minutes earlier than the Virginia Key times.
The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood statement, first in effect until 7 p.m. Friday, for coastal Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, warning of possible minor flooding of low-lying roads and property around high tide. The statement covers all of coastal Miami-Dade, including Surfside, Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor Islands, North Bay Village and Sunny Isles Beach.
The city asks people to stay out of floodwater and to report flooding to the Public Works control room, open around the clock, at 305-673-7625, at [email protected] or through the Miami Beach Gov app. City staff watch tide levels and respond to reports, the city said.
The city’s email lists Nov. 23–26 as the next window for higher-than-normal tides this fall. The last round, in late October, pushed water onto Collins Avenue and North Beach streets.
