Sunny Isles Beach elects a mayor and two commissioners Tuesday; nine candidates on the ballot
Mayor Larisa Svechin faces former Mayor Dana Goldman and Robert J. Spence III, and two open commission seats draw six candidates. Every city voter can vote in all three races.
Sunny Isles Beach voters choose a mayor and fill two of the four City Commission seats on Tuesday, Nov. 3, with nine candidates on the ballot, according to Miami-Dade County’s official ballot. It is the only town in Red Sidewalks’ coverage area with a municipal race on Tuesday’s ballot.
The races are nonpartisan, and all three are elected at large: every registered voter in the city can vote for each seat, whatever their address, according to the city. The mayor and commissioners serve four-year terms. Candidates for a commission seat must live in that seat’s residential area.
On the ballot
Mayor: Dana Goldman, Robert J. Spence III and Larisa Svechin. Svechin is the current mayor, according to the city. Goldman served as mayor in 2021 and 2022, the city’s list of former mayors shows, and Local 10 has reported on her bid to win the job back.
Commission Seat 2: Robert Balciunas, Alex Brisk, Steve Hirsch and David Vergel. Alex Lama now holds the seat, according to the city, and is not on the ballot.
Commission Seat 4: Carolina Cruz Gonzalez and Magaly “Maggie” Gordo. Vice Mayor Jeniffer Viscarra now holds the seat, the city’s site shows, and is not on the ballot.
Seats 1 and 3, held by Jerry Joseph and Fabiola Stuyvesant, are not up this year.
How to vote
Early voting ends Sunday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. On Election Day, polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and voters must go to their assigned precinct. Voters in precinct 002, who normally vote at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, vote at Gateway Park, 151 Sunny Isles Blvd., this time.
Sunny Isles Beach ballots also carry the federal, state and county races and statewide amendments. Candidate filings and campaign finance reports are linked from the city’s elections page, and the City Clerk’s office is at the Government Center, 18070 Collins Ave.
In Miami Beach, the only local question is the proposed amendment to the 1691 Michigan Avenue ground lease.
